Win a $25,000 High-Def Home Makeover from HD DVD

Better educating consmers about the benefits of high-definition is a top priority for HD manufacturers and retailers alike. The HD DVD group has decided to make things a little more enticing for the “students” by offering a “scholarship” of sorts in their latest promotion: a $25,000 high-def home theater makeover (naturally featuring HD DVD of course) as well as some tips for going high-def.
The entry form is available at the HighDefYourHome.com web site, and the education part consists of a link to collection of tips by Omar Wasow, such as (I’ve summarized the actual tip wording):
- Get a Game Plan
- Think Outside the Living Room
- See the Big Picture
- Equip Yourself
- Keep Connections Hidden
- Get the Perfect View
- Lights, Paint, Window Treatments – ACTION
- High-def Your Home
- Get in Control
- Small Budget? No Problem
Don’t rush in, think it all out. This can be a big project.
A rarely-used dining room might make a good spot, as might a room with few windows and a large wall.
Purchase the screen first and put it at eye-level.
A good home theater needs more than just an HDTV. Get an AV receiver, surround sound speakers, and an HD DVD player of course.
Conceal the cables behind a wall or false baseboard, think about getting flat cables that can be hidden under carpet.
Put the seating so that it’s at eye-level, and the distance from the HDTV should be about three times the width of the screen.
Canned lights point straight down and not into your screen, and shades/blinds can further enhance your daytime viewing.
You need more than an HDTV to go high-def; make sure you’ve signed up for HD on cable or satellite, and don’t forget the HD DVD player too.
Check into getting a universal remote controller that can be programmed by computer.
You can make a big difference in your home theater just by rearranging furniture you already have, and just buying a few pieces of inexpensive equipment (like an HD DVD player starting at way under $299).
Head over to the contest signup page and read the more detailed tips for yourself.
The grand prize is a HD home theater makeover not to exceed $25,000 which includes an interior design consultation for the home theater room, and upgrades/updates to the home theater equipment which includes HDTV, HD DVD, a library of movies, and sound equipment. No specific models of anything are mentioned because each person’s makeover could be different.
The contest started on September 27 and ends midnight, October 31, 2007.

The tip I’d add is “check with the wife (or significant other) before making the bigger plans.” Big changes about how your living room is set up will have an impact on everybody in the household, and you need to make sure that everybody is on board with your plans.

ha… Really, you can make a home theater on a small budget, without spending thousands of dollars? All I need is an HD DVD player?
Ok, I’ll just hook that up to my 27″ fullscreen standard definition TV… through an RF converter no less. Thank god I don’t have to spend much!
What exactly constitutes a “small budget” these days? If you are buying an HD DVD player you’d better darn well have an HDTV to go with it.
