UPDATE: Amazon has now combined the Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks titles into one sales page.

This week started off with a two-for-one sale at Amazon featuring 103 Universal titles. It’s actually a 50% off sale, but the math works out to essentially the same thing as buying two (at full price) and getting one of them free, which is called a BOGO (buy one get one) nowadays.

Paramount/DreamWorks is now joining the fun and bringing about 46 titles on sale for 50% off. I wasn’t able to find a special page for this deal, as there is for the Universal one, but here’s a list of the movies involved in this sale. Most are going for about $15, which is half off their usually $30 price tag.

Two box sets are also included at 50% off: Mission Impossible for $50 and Star Trek for $98.

The sale comes just in time to for all the new HD DVD owners from the Xbox 360’s HD DVD add-on player. You can start off with favorites like Transformers for only $20. Or perhaps movies like Stardust or Failure to Launch for Valentine’s Day.

It’s a long list, so I’ll break this posting into a couple of parts to not clutter up the main page. If/when a dedicated page becomes available at Amazon, I’ll update with a link to it.

UPDATE: Here’s a link to their page, which combines the Universal, Paramount and DreamWorks movies, making for a big selection of 147 titles.

You can hover your mouse over the movie title to see its 50% off price. Clicking will open up a new window (or tab) on your browser, and clicking on any other title will open that page up in the same window/tab.

This list is missing notable titles like Shrek the Third, but I’m not complaining.

I’m also putting up my standard reminder/disclosure/warning that HDDVD.com is a site for people who are into HD DVD. This means you probably own a player, and are looking for ways to enjoy it, and news about sales on movies is usually of high interest.

If you’re here to tell us some news or information that’s more appropriate at the site for the other high-def disc format, then save your effort and don’t be overly disappointed when your sharing is not approved for publication here.

The last week or so has been very interesting for HD DVD. Hopefully these deals will continue and consumers will take advantage of the great offers. It was amazing how quickly the Xbox 360 HD DVD Add On sold out… but Amazon had them back in stock the next day.

This is a fairly solid list. The best one on there (imo) is Zodiac, which just came out about 6 weeks ago if I recall. For $19.99 that is a great deal.

I went to Costco the other day looking for a upconverting player. They had the HD DVD player on sale with the 7 movie deal for 129. I am now glad I bought it with sales on these discs becoming more frequent.

I think it’s pretty signficant that Costco is involved with selling HD DVD players and restocking them with new ones as they run out. I am experienced enough with shopping at Costco for over a decade to have seen that they will abruptly stop carrying products and never restock when they feel like it. When they do that, it means either they only bought a few lots of those items, or they didn’t feel like they could sell more.

Costco is not a liquidator, and anybody who has shopped there knows that they’re picky about the model selection on just about anything they sell. For example, they don’t sell five kinds of coffee makers, they just sell a couple of models. Sometimes that limited selection is frustrating, but that’s how the company stays profitable.

I think that they are selling enough of these players to give them enough confidence to restock. Also, they’re not really selling any other important Toshiba products at the store (like HDTVs), so I doubt it’s all part of some special deal that they’re getting in exchange for this HD DVD “support.”

On the other hand, I’ve been to a few Costcos around work and home and seen them have very different levels of HD DVD “support” in terms of what’s on display and how they display it. You might even think they don’t care about the format – or any format for that matter.

For example, the shiny new one that opened closer to my house had an HDTV showing Planet Earth on standard DVD. I bet they’d have sold a lot more Planet Earth, HDTVs, and the high-def player of the consumer’s choice if they’d just popped in the high-def version.

The one I purchased came with the Bourne Idenity and Supremacy. I had only seen them sold with 300 and the Idenity before. They were showing some travel show on HD DVD on a 1080 Panasonic Plasma.

And that’s proof about Costco restocking with the latest, versus some kind of clearance thing going on.

Has anyone heard if Dreamworks plans to put Gladiator on HD DVD? That is the one I’m waiting for.

  9. Pravin Says:

Amazon has it listed as a potential product, and you can sign up for an email notification for when the pre-order becomes available. That’s no guarantee, but at least you might get an early notice that the disc is coming out.

How will we be able to rent movies with netflix stop selling hddvd? Is it worth the buy when you can’t rent?

  11. Pravin Says:

Depends where you live and if the Blockbuster or Hollywood video in your area rents HD DVD titles. It’s not clear if Blockbuster will extend their Blu exclusivity to online rental. But in the end, the Netflix move does make it harder. In some ways, I think it’s a bigger deal than Warner.
