Charles, at least you got some sort of HD and have the ability to view it.

I’d be upset if I paid for an HD DVD or Blu-ray and got only a standard DVD. It happens now and then on my Netflix discs, but at least those are just rentals.

I just received my order from Deep Discount. The craziest thing happened. I opened my box to examine the DVD’s as I have learned to do. While I ordered the HD DVD giftset what I received was the Blu-ray set that was shrinkwrapped in the HD DVD Box. I started to send them back but since I have a PS3 I decided to keep them since the Blu ray set cost $55.00 and I technically bought it for $19.99. Just an FYI for those of you wanting the HD DVD set examine before settling into thinking you have the HD DVD set. It may be that I received some sort of Snafu but in case not you may want to note this as my set was on backorder.

There’s “noise” and there’s “grain.” Noise is that crud you see on images on your compressed satellite or cable TV feed, and it’s in just about all YouTube videos. Grain is actually part of the film, and is not the result of compression problems. When you can see grain, you know you’re seeing some of the original detail from the film frame itself. Nowadays, they actually add grain to make some movies look more like film.

Shrek 3 was extremely sharp as was Beowulf, but those are computer-generated in the first place so we’d expect them to be high-quality transfers. Transformers had some of that grain added to it, but it was great looking too.

The news about a new BBC disc coming out is unusual, and we can hope that (1) the customer service person who sent it was working with correct information, and (2) they don’t change their minds in the next few months.

also…I read on the amazon HD DVD board that Channel 4 is planning to release Trainspotting on HD DVD in the UK. The guy appeared to copy and paste an email he got from a Channel 4 rep, so I’m not sure how trustworthy the news is. It would be pretty sweet though, especially to show that new HD DVD titles would still sell.

Has anyone found a well transferred Paramount HD DVD? I only have 3, but they are all the poorest of the group (considering the original content). I have mission impossible, the italian job and sleepy hollow all of which have grain issues and dirty transfers. Maybe these are older releases and the format came a long way since then? I figured Italian Job would pop since it was a newer movie and filled with flashy colors and locations…but it just lays there like an upres sdvd.

I just purchased Battle Star Galactica off of Inetvideo.com, I purchased Ocean 11,12 & 13 off of Deep Discount. However it was on backorder. I hope it come soon. I really purchased it because one of my favorite comedian’s The Late Bernie Mac is in it & I had to own all three in HD DVD format. Thanks again for the great deals!!!
