Plenty of Movies on Sale February 8, 2008

UPDATE: Just added (Feb 12): Amazon Buy 2 Get the Third Free

Steve Jobs says that people don’t read books any more, but I’m sure that Barnes & Noble would disagree. However, if you have reduced your book reading, or forsaken it altogether because you’ve been spending more time in front of your HDTV, then Barnes & Noble still wants to prove that they can be friends with you. Their gesture is a 50% off sale on HD DVD movie titles.

It’s pretty much the same sale that Amazon had all last week and expanded for this week, except that you can get an additional discount if you’re a Barnes & Noble member. It means that a title that’s on sale right now for $14.99 would only cost $13.49 for members.

Alas, membership is not free. I used to have me one of these memberships a couple of years ago when I was picking up books like crazy. They do save you a lot of money in the end, but only if you’re a frequent shopper.

Here are the links of interest for all of your HD DVD movie shopping for this weekend, including this sale at B&N:

Dose anyone know if Barnes and Noble have 50% off instore also?

  2. Matt Says:

I am headed there right now. I will let you know.

  3. Matt Says:

I could not find out. The only title they had in stock was Planet Earth. The young lady at the register had no idea.

  4. vektar Says:

thanks for the effort would be nice if online sale was aslo in store

  5. NutMan Says:

These sales are really helping HD DVD. Best buy and Circuit city are both sold out of HD DVD players.

  6. K bill Says:

Now if we can only get NetFlix to reverse their decision to not carry HDDVD! We will have a chance!

Looks like Amazon sale on HD DVD is doing very well. Last 10 days it seemed to topped the salesrank of blur a few times.

I think figures would look better with 150 top bestsellers since the sale is about 140 titles. I took advantage still cheaper then here in Europe with the cost for sending. Also the Toshiba HD DVD players remain the steady in the bestselling DVD players list with 3 entries in the top ten.

I expect other retailers have the same strong HD DVD sales. Nielsen Videoscan seems to support that trend.

Time to cancel Netflix. Mmmmmm…. red meat is good!!!!

  9. Pravin Says:

I’ve still got a lot of movies to go through on Netflix so I’ll stick around for now, but getting HD DVD movies was pretty much the only reason I joined. Good thing it’s not like a cell phone contract that you can’t get out of.

  10. K bill Says:

AND now BESTBUY has turned its back on us? This cannot be good….. Hopefully they will change their minds as well… Rather be RED !!!

  11. Pravin Says:

Best Buy’s used friendlier language than Netflix, and they’re saying they’ll still be keeping HD DVD around. Just my educated guess, but I think that’s because they still have dealings with Toshiba on other consumer electronics products and don’t want to spoil their relationship.

  12. Rick Says:

Maybe I am wrong but a few months ago I asked a Best Buy clerk about HiDef DVD (BD and HD DVD) he told me that he could not reccomend one over the other due to store policy. Has this policy changed? and if so if I were Toshiba I would stop shipping Regza LCD’s to their stores until they also promote HD DVD too. You wonder why BD is “winning” this war? I don’t, Best Buy’s new policy “Lets push a format that is very incomplete and still trying to catch up with HD DVD (not sales wise but functionality).” I would have been a BD supporter way back when Sony was toting the fact that BD was made of 50% recycled paper, but now that they are so stubborn about their ridiculous format I could care less about what studios switch to BD or not. Warner was not a tragic loss, I think HD DVD is better off anyway.

So BD fans unite and rejoice your format appears to be “winning” a battle that we really shouldn’t care too much about anyway. I could care less about who actually “wins” (there are no winners in the format war only people who feel they have been wronged by BD or HD DVD) this battle, I am just happy knowing I am not supporting Sony’s BD at all.

Thank you Pravin for keeping this site up for fans of HD DVD!

  13. rwarner174 Says:

How can you guys be in such denial? Its over.

  14. Pravin Says:

rwarner: I’m pretty sure that if this was going the other way, then you’d be the denial king. Take good notes here, man. Everything that pisses you off about HD DVD and HD DVD fans and owners — that’s all the same stuff that pisses other people off about you, or will in the future when you pick up the next issue to get all fanboy about.

  15. Rick Says:

rwarner: If it is so over then why would Samsung be getting sued over profile 1.0 players not being able to show all content of current BD movies? You will NEVER hear of Toshiba being sued this way! Yeah it is over, for Sony bc they are next!

The lord has told me that you must shut this heaten site, is red like the evil one and not blue like the heavens.

  17. Pravin Says:

The lord hath given thou a good sense of humor and allowed thou to express thine wrath in a tasteful way. Go now and spread thine good taste among thine kind and share it with them so that they too may live in peace amongst all who agree or disagree with the word of thine lord.

  18. Rick Says:

alegria: It is heathen you dumba$$, not heaten! Try reading more it will make you a better speller! But at least it is warm here from the RED glow!

  19. protonman Says:

    Red like the RRoD?

  20. Pravin Says:

No, he wasn’t talking about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVXzN7jCcRA

He was talking about something warmer.

  21. Joe Says:

The deal got even better, yesterday I bought 3 warner hddvds from amazon, they still had the 50% off deal going on plus for the warner movies it was buy two get one free, so I ended up getting 3 movies for the price of 1, how can I go wrong, thats cheaper than dvd!
