New Year HD DVD Preview: New Line Cinema in 2008
by Pravin on January 4th, 2008 in movies.
It turned out that yesterday’s listing of Warner Bros. theatrical releases for 2008 was missing the releases from New Line Cinema (New Line is part of Time Warner). We’ll fix that problem today.
There’s only informaton for the first half of the year because New Line hasn’t released their entire schedule just yet. I got this information from their mySpace page as well as their own publicity site. If our request for more information comes through, I’ll update this posting with any new information they pass along.
Just to remind you… as with Universal, Paramount, and Warner Bros. over the last few days, these are all listings of theatrical releases and we’re only predicting that these new releases will come out for home consumption some months later.
Over Her Dead Body, February 1
Henry’s fiancee, Kate (Eva Longoria), was killed on their wedding day, and Henry (Paul Rudd) agrees to see a psychic to help him out. Henry and the psychic fall in love with each other, but Kate’s ghost is determined to keep the couple apart by haunting the psychic.

Be Kind Rewind, February 22
Jack Black accidentally erases all of the tapes at his friend’s video store, but they have a cunning plan to save the day: re-enact the various movies themselves, and their customers will be none the wiser. This movie is a good excuse to shoot a lot of funny skits, and I bet it’s going to be at least half funny, if not more.

Semi-Pro, February 29
Having made fun of NASCAR with Talladega Nights and skating in Blades of Glory, Will Ferrell sets his sights on basketball. With an all-star cast of funny guys all around, I can’t possibly see how this movie could go wrong. Sure, Will Ferrell plays pretty much the same dude in every movie, but dang it, he’s funny and it works, so who cares, right?

Pride and Glory, March 14
Loyalties are tested in a family of NYPD police officers, as one of the sons investigates a corruption case involving his older brother and brother-in-law.

Inkheart, March 19
Meggie’s dad has a special ability to bring fairy tale characters to life when he reads the stories out loud. Things were going great until Dad (Brendan Fraser) is kidnapped by one of the evil characters who wants to bring his henchmen to life as well. Meggie must now rescue her dad, with help from friends — some real and some magical.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, April 25
Last time around, this multi-ethnic duo were tracking down a White Castle joint. In this reunion, the guys are arrested for terrorism on their flight to Amsterdam and sent to Guantanamo. They make a quick escape and must prove their innocence.

Sex and the City: The Movie, May 30
The vixens from the hit TV show take their act to the big screen. Since this is not some kind of remake of a decades-old show, I can only imagine that the movie will probably feel like a very special episode. We’ll find out on May 30.
New Line Cinema made news in the HD DVD community because of their decision to delay a couple of HD DVD releases by a couple of months due to the fact that HD DVD players do not enforce region codes. The good thing for us is that the discs do eventually come out, but you just have to wait. It was also pointed out in one of the comments to the Warner Bros. posting that these delays only apply to new movies, and not their catalog of older ones. The good thing for New Line is that people might put up with this because many of New Line’s movies are worth that wait.
