HD DVD Holiday Deals
by Pravin on November 30th, 2008 in shopping.
Borders has a “Cyber Monday” deal on Dec. 1-2 of an additional 40% discount on their DVD box sets. The HD DVD sets are already significantly discounted to begin with at around $10 a piece for titles such as The Sopranos, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica, and it will be interesting to see if you can get another 40% off on these. The sale applies to their DVD and Blu-ray selection as well.
Reader Mark left a tip about HD Scape’s clearance of their nature and landscape HD DVDs for a ridiculous price of $3.95. You may never have considered getting a fireplace or aquarium disc at the original prices, but at $4 each, they might make a great disc to play in the background while you have company over for the holidays.
Finally, on a personal and site note, I’m going on vacation for most of the month and won’t be able to post about Christmas deals so much. But you can come to the rescue of your fellow HD DVD bretheren and report deals in the comments. To prevent comment spam, and the occasional format war contribution, all comments at the site are moderated. This means I read and approve each one. I’m going to be delayed on approving these comments, but please don’t let that stop you from sending them along and sharing info about the sales you’ve found.
Have a wonderful holiday season!
- Borders 40% off on box sets (Dec. 1-2)
- $3.95 Nature and Landscape HD DVDs clearance at HD Scape
- Amazon’s $7.99 sale
Here are quick links to the usual places that have HD DVD deals:
- Amazon.com’s HD DVD store usually can’t be beat when they decide to put on a sale
- DeepDiscount.com usually has free shipping and decent prices
- iNetVideo gets creative with their deals

The borders deal was unbelieveable. While there might be some better prices on individual discs at some of the other sites (amazon, inetvideo, etc), I was able to get Planet Earth (UK Version), Sopranos Season 6 Parts 1 and 2, and the Best of HD DVD Volume 1 (Swordfish, Training Day, Lethal Weapon, The Road Warrior). 3 Box Sets and 4 Movies for $39, shipping included. I dont know how you can beat that. I hope some of you were able to take advantage of the sale.

Boo, Hiss. They cancelled my order. I’m sure they were swamped with too many orders, not enough product.
December 3rd, 2008 at 5:50 pm
They canceled mine too. In mid-order, well it seemed that way. I just finally got around to venting.
December 3rd, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Mine too. What a big lemon. I placed a huge order just as they started the sale; only 2 titles made it. I really believe this was not an honest sale.

I hate Borders. The deals were good but nothing was available!!!! Good deals but damn nothing was there.

Frys.com has lowered the price for both Battlestar Galactica Season 1 and Heroes Season 1 to $14.99. yes, there are the HD DVD box sets. You can pay for shipping or place your order online for store pickup and save yourself some dough. Van Helsing is only $4.99, too.
December 12th, 2008 at 8:41 am
The Fry’s price on Battlestar Galactica Season 1 has dropped to 9.99
Alas, their Matrix Complete Collection (when available) is still pegged at 34.99
Perhaps a holiday miracle will occur and this collection will go on sale, somewhere…..

Last night I bought used hddvd’s from Blockbuster.com. They have a 7.99 sale. It’s hard to find and I found some conflicting information about when it ends, but at about 1am cst the sale was still working. They have a lot of titles most places don’t have anymore, plus its free shipping and cheap tax. I also found a code that wasn’t advertised but still worked for 30% off my entire purchase. I got 5 pre-viewed hddvds for 24 bucks total. I was checking out a forum somewhere and everyone had ordered theirs earlier this month and everyone said they received them in the original hddvd case as well. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Go to blockbuster.com, click on buy, and there is a banner on the top for the sale. You click on add to cart and have to choose the pre-viewed hddvd option. The code for the 30% off is “holidaysurprise”.
Here is the last page of the forum thread:

correction* i received 4 hd dvds for 24 bucks. I had 5 in my cart but before I checked out I had to remove one that wasn’t available anymore. So thats about 5.50 a pop all together which is pretty great.

I totally know that 24/4 = 6, not 5.50……..

Hello and Happy New Year. I live in Alabama; I went to run a few errands this morning and ended up at the supermarket. Here it is called Kroger; I believe the very same one is called Ralphs in California. It is the same kind of store like Publix, Harries Teeter, etc. Anyway, you know these places carry a small amount of dvds here and there. Kroger here has dvd sales pretty frequently; you can get some nice titles for $4 or $5 each and I always like looking into their dvd bargain bin. Today was no different; there it was, a dvd blow-out. Great. I went to check it out and… they had lots of hd-dvds for $5.99 each! All brand new! At least 15 different titles (Miami Vice, Children of Men, Fearless, Unleashed, etc). I think it is worth it if you do not already have any of these titles. I hope you can find this deal where you live. Take care guys.

Not really a holiday deal, but the german steel book version of Death Proof was actually released on December 15. I ordered mine a few days ago, and in total it was only 17 bucks american. I already have the SDVD, but figured I’d treat myself to a rare HDDVD when I could. I received a shipping confirmation email, but not the item yet. I’ll report back when I do with the condition, but who knows how long it will take to get here. I found it through a thread on Amazon.com, and most people seemed happy with their copies. I ordered from www.grooves-inc.com, which only charged 2.00 euro for shipping. Its also available on other sites, but this is the best deal. Just click on the HDDVD link on the left side of the page and its the first option.

Inetvideo increased their hddvd stock to 111 titles, and still has the free shipping over 49 bucks sale. Interesting to note, they are selling the first matrix movie, without the rest of the box set, for those of you who didn’t like the rest of the trilogy.
January 12th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Yes, inet increased there stock listed on the site, but almost no titles are actually available when you try to add them to your cart…

I received my items from blockbuster.com today, they were shipped on the 7th. Took a while to ship, but I did order on new years eve, so that may have had something to do with it. They came in the original hd dvd cases, all in great shape, original artwork. The discs themselves are slightly used/scuffed, but nothing too serious. It actually looks like someone tried to clean them, but did a poor job, so a good cleaning should probably take care of the scuffs. I havent tested them all, but these 4 titles (goodfellas, into the wild, zodiac and MI:3) for 24 bucks totaly (free shipping) was an awesome deal. Try to take advantage while you can, not sure how long that code for 30% off will still work.

Received my Deathproof steel book HDDVD today from www.grooves-inc.com. It is beautiful! Perfect condition, shipped in bubble wrap, and fast. Was shipped 1/07/09. 16 bucks for an import, probably the last HDDVD release, is pretty sweet. Must have for any HDDVD collector, especially if you’re a Tarantino fan. It even comes with a nifty little movie postcard inside.

I just recently found out about the Fry’s slae. I thought it was only online when I heard of it but then went to the closest one to me and saw that they had 4 shelves full of HD DVD’s. over the last few weeks, I’ve bought ‘Flags of Our Fathers’, ‘The Last Samurai’, ‘Superman:The Movie’, ‘The Skeleton Key’ ($4.99!), ‘World Trade Center’ and ‘Zodiac’. Most of them were $7.99 while ‘Zodiac” was $11.99. I’m sure most everyone else knew this but I was late to the game. Now that I know, I’m stockpiling. I also recently ordered ‘Superman II’, ‘Superman Returns’, ‘Beowulf’ and Chronicles of Riddick’ on Amazon and found ‘Oceans Trilogy’ for $29.99 at a small corner new and used place. This brings my collection count to 48.
I know Toshiba vowed to stop making HD DVD player but for all of us who still own, buy and watch, it would be nice if they made some standard dvd players that also played HD DVD, which I guess would make them HD DVD players but that doesn’t seem to much to ask for those of us who were there when they needed us. As time goes on, these technology’s are easier and cheaper to implement so I don’t see why they can’t throw us dogs a bone.
Personally, it makes me a little nervous to know they won’t produce anymore HD DVD players. Meaning, we have to buy a few just to protect our collections. But what if they break? Are parts available? Will Toshiba offer any assistance? I picture myself with a broken player and a stack of HD DVD’s and all these questions. They kinda nag at me.

The only dvd player i’ve had break in my dvd owning lifetime is my ps2, and that never broke fully but just got finicky. I’m betting my HD DVD player won’t let me down either. Hell, my family’s betamax player finally went dead only 3 or 4 years ago, and am I still watching Beta? No. Same will probably go for HD DVD. By the time my player breaks, I’m sure something else other than HDDVD or Bluray will be here. PS: the blockbuster 30% off code of holidaysurprise still works. Picked up Eastern Promises and The Host yesterday, 12 bucks. I know a lot of titles aren’t actually in stock once you click on them, but its worth checking all the ones you really want. I’ve gotten all the ones I wanted.
