Blu-ray Boss Thinks HD DVD is the Same as Blu

by Pravin on September 2nd, 2007 in formats, news.

“Both format players use the same back-end decoders so the video and the audio is nearly similar. And I can’t imagine that an optical mechanism for HD DVD and Blu-ray has a big spread in cost – the expensive part is the blue laser. Technology-wise, there is not a major difference.”

These are some of the comments from Frank Simonis, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association in an interview over at Tech.co.uk.

Mr. Simonis also thinks that one of the advantages of Blu-ray is that you don’t (or maybe it’s can’t) stop a movie in the middle to pee. Gosh, I had been doing that with VHS for many years, I didn’t know that it was undesirable.

What a jackass– It appears that the rush to release on BD caused serious transfer issues and misalignment. What a failure.

Pirates doesn’t even fit properly on BD!!!!

This is very bad. How can they release crap like this on what they say is the best format? You never hear of this happening to DVD or HD DVD.

There’s also this famous Pirates of the Caribbean fiasco demonstrating some serious early-adopter issues on Blu-ray: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gQG4OFgrpA

That interview demonstrates why executives and others are often limited to speaking only about their area of expertise. The CEO of Philips had a much more realistic and down-to-earth set of comments about HDM last week saying that it was really early to call a winner and that progress is definitely being made towards a better HD future. It’s only when somebody puts on their official party hat that they start making dumber comments.

haha PIRATES LOOKS TERRIBLE!!! please 20th century fox jump onboard and do both formats… save me from buying a blu-ray player just for a few movies!
