140 HD DVD Titles for $5.99 Thru Amazon
by Pravin on January 17th, 2009 in shopping.
UPDATE: It appears that the free shipping only applies to movies that are shipped out from Amazon. Movies sent out from this Amazon-affiliated dealer do not qualify for free shipping. I’m working on a list of the ones that do qualify, hang on…
UPDATE: This deal may be dead or lukewarm. As I went through the selection of movies, I found that many added to my cart last night were no longer being fulfilled through Amazon, and thus ineligible for the discounted shipping. In addition, many movies are now $4.97 and others have gone up by a few bucks. Try your luck with this deal by looking for the movies that indicate “2 new and used for…” and one of those 2 is likely to be done through Amazon, and thus eligible for free shipping. (thanks to ’sdscribe’ at the AVS forum for that hint)
Amazon.com offers numerous channels for retailing. They’ll sell many products themselves, and also partner with stores or resellers in some way, including handling the order fulfillment. It’s that latter case that brings us the most recent closeout sale on 140 HD DVD titles.
“Closeoutmovies Storefront” is a reseller using Amazon’s order fulfilment system, which means that Amazon ships directly from their own warehouses, and that you can still get some Amazon features like Amazon Prime, and Amazon’s free Super Saver shipping on orders that are $25 or more. At the $5.99 price, you’ll have to order four movies and some cheap $1.04 trinket to qualify for free shipping.
All of the movies are Universal Studios titles and selling for $5.99. The Battlestar Galactica and Heroes, Season One box sets are selling for $12.99. I checked over at Buy.com and DeepDiscount.com to see if this might be part of some general sale on Universal discs, but no luck. It appears that this is a closeout only from this particular seller on Amazon.
The other deals that people have been reporting both here and at the AVS forum threads have been great sales at Fry’s, and that Blockbuster is selling their used movies. In some cases, the Blockbuster movies are barely used, and in some other cases, the movies are arriving damaged. Longtime reader, Patrick, has been lucky with his Blockbuster orders as have many others. If you want to try them out, make sure to enter discount code holidaysurprise to save an additional 30%.
Some of you are going to mention that good old inetvideo.com has movies for $3.99 and $5.99, and those are good prices indeed. However, shipping on a $25 order is nearly $14, so it doesn’t work out to be the same great deal right now as this one through Amazon.

- Blockbuster’s used movie sale with 30% off using code holidaysurprise

I think id like to pick up Assault on Precinct 13 and Atonement. I’m on the fence to Dragonheart, but those are pretty good deals.

You can also try the link below to give you a list view of all HD DVD movies instead of thumbnail. This works well for me as I am an Amazon Prime member and it is easy to see which ones are eligible for Prime shipping. If you are also a Prime member, this link will tell you which ones are and aren’t. You just have to go through all HD DVD movie list though.

If you do order from the non-affiliated seller, you can click on their name to see a list of movies being sold by that seller.
I figure if you are already paying shipping for one movie, you can order a few more and get discounted shipping.
Alas, in my case he only had one movie that I really wanted, so I could not take advantage.
But at 3.98 for movie plus media mail, my whole order came out to 6.50 or so. Not too bad.

You can get movies CHEAP from http://www.frys.com
There is a feature called “In store pick up” under the shipping settings – if you choose this setting shipping if free, but you have to pick up the movie at a Fry’s location.
The highest amount for shipping was around $10.
Also, you can get a HD-DVD from Fry’s for as little as $2.
Hope I helped,
Lee

if you think about it – Toshiba could possibly resurrect HD-DVD.
Blu-Ray sales are at a stand still, the prices for Blu-Ray movies and players are sooooo expensive.
I bet that Toshiba could make a fortune by bringing HD-DVD back into the market – the players are cheap, and the movies are too.
Anybody else agree with me???

Theoretically, a lot of things are possible. I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Blu-ray sales are at a standstill. Blu-ray sales are not extraordinarily high, considering there’s only the one HD media format, but they’re progressing enough for more electronics manufacturers to feel confident about putting out $200 players at Target and Walmart.
Dark Knight did really well, and since there was only Blu-ray to put it out on, that format gets to point to the big sales numbers enjoyed by that title. That movie is good enough to have done well on just about any format. I mean, if it only came out on Xbox and Netflix, then those companies would be pointing at mega sales.
I think Toshiba has probably shuttered way too many of their HD DVD operations, and has moved on to focusing on other technologies.

Yeah, I’d love to see HD DVD make a comeback but it’s never gonna happen. Even if Toshiba wanted to, the studios just aren’t going to do it. They’re not ones for gambling.
I’ve accepted that fate as I have Blu and Red now, but I’d like to see Toshiba release some more HD DVD players in the future so we don’t have to freak out if ours stop working. Gotta admit, I’m a little concerned about that. To everyone else, Toshiba could just be releasing great upconverting players but they just also happen to play HD DVD’s. Even if a smaller company were to do it, it would be fine.
I’d just like to know that I don’t have to buy up a few of the existing players as insurance to protect from one not working anymore.

They have the xbox 360 ad on with heroes and BG for $50 at fry’s. I think they have had this before or someone did.

The closeoutmovies storefront on Amazon has a whole bunch of Universal hd dvds for 2.97 new. Plus shipping it comes out to 5.98 a disc. Pretty good for a new disc from a trusted amazon seller. Titles like Dazed and Confused, Children of Men, Bourne Identity and Hot Fuzz. Most are Universal, but there are some 3.47 paramount titles as well. Wish I found this before buying used from blockbuster.com. Even though those worked great, would always want new vs. used. I couldn’t figure out a way to sort by price, so you just have to sift through. I found this last Sunday as well, held off a day, and price rose to 7 bucks during the week. This might just be a weekend thing so act now if these are some titles you want.
